Celebrating Earth Day

Published Date:

Earth Day is a time to reflect on the importance our collective actions have in safeguarding our planet for future generations. As a People, Planet and Values-Focused company, we are committed to minimizing our impact on the planet by prioritizing sustainability in all we do.

Every decision we make, both individually and as a community, has an impact on our environment. This Earth Day, let’s recommit ourselves to being stewards of our planet by focusing on the following action items.

Recycling, especially #1 (PET), #2 (HDPE) and #5 (PP) plastics. Recycling is one of the most beneficial things we can do for the planet as it is essential for conserving resources, reducing waste, saving energy, protecting ecosystems and promoting economic sustainability.

When it comes to recycling plastic, the following types are considered widely recyclable:

  • #1 plastics such as water and soda bottles and peanut butter jars
  • #2 plastics such as milk jugs, detergent containers, shampoo bottles
  • #5 plastics such as yogurt containers, syrup bottles and margarine tubs

It’s important to always check with your local municipality first to determine what is accepted in your location. For guidance on finding out what is recyclable in your area, click here.

Purchasing items made from recycled materials. This means that part of or all of the material used in the production of the product had been previously used and reprocessed into a new product. Packaging can be made with a range of recycled content from 10% to 100% – the higher the percentage of recycled content, the more virgin plastic is being saved. However, any amount of recycled content is helpful.

When it comes to increasing the amount of recycled material in packaging, consumer shopping habits play a big role. Some actions you can take include:

  • Buying brands that use recycled materials. By making those purchasing decisions, you are telling companies there is a demand for those packaging choices.
  • Recycling everything you can to help provide materials to keep the recycling chain thriving.
  • Recycling items made with recycled content – many can be recycled multiple times.

Together, let us continue to lead by example, inspire meaningful change and create a better tomorrow for generations to come.
